The Formal Dynamism of Categories: Stops vs. Fricatives, Primitivity vs. Simplicity

Minimalist Phonology (MP; Pöchtrager 2006) constructs its theory based on the phonological epistemological principle (Kaye 2001) and exposes the arbitrary nature of standard Government Phonology (sGP) and strict-CV (sCV), particularly with reference to their confusion of melody and structure. For Pöchtrager, these are crucially different, concluding that place of articulation is melodic (expressed with elements), while manner of articulation is structural. In this model, the heads (xN and xO) can license and incorporate the length of the other into their own interpretation, that is xN influences xO projections as well as its own and vice versa. This dynamism is an aspect of the whole framework and this paper in particular will show that stops and fricatives evidence a plasticity of category and that, although fricatives are simpler in structure, stops are the more primitive of the two. This will be achieved phonologically through simply unifying the environment of application of the licensing forces within Pöchtrager's otherwise sound onset structure. In doing so, we automatically make several predictions about language acquisition and typology and show how lenition in Qiang (Sino-Tibetan) can be more elegantly explained

Bremelanotide for Treatment of Female Hypoactive Sexual Desire

Hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) is a persistent deficiency or absence of sexual fantasies and desire resulting in significant distress or interpersonal difficulty. Women with this disorder may display a lack of motivation for sexual activity, reduced responsiveness to erotic cues, a loss of interest during sexual activity, and avoidance of situations that could lead to sexual activity. The pathophysiology of HSDD is thought to be centered around inhibitory and excitatory hormones, neurotransmitters, and specific brain anatomy. Due to the multifactorial nature of HSDD, treatment can be complex and must attempt to target the biological and psychosocial aspects of the disorder. Bremelanotide is a melanocortin receptor agonist and has been recently approved by the FDA to treat HSDD. Bremelanotide is administered intranasally or as a subcutaneous injection. The recommended dosage of bremelanotide is 1.75 mg injected subcutaneously in the abdomen or thigh at least 45 min before sexual activity. Studies showed improvements in desire, arousal, and orgasm scores when 1.75 mg of bremelanotide was administered before sexual activity compared to a placebo. Bremelanotide is a promising way to treat HSDD

Viloxazine, a Non-stimulant Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitor, for the Treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: A 3 Year Update.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common neurodevelopmental disorder in childhood. Current treatment options for ADHD include pharmacological treatment (stimulants, non-stimulants, anti-depressants, anti-psychotics), psychological treatment (behavioral therapy with or without parent training, cognitive training, neurofeedback), and complementary and alternative therapies (vitamin supplementation, exercise). Central nervous system (CNS) stimulants are the primary pharmacological therapy used in treatment; however, these stimulant drugs carry a high potential for abuse and severe psychological/physical dependence. Viloxazine, a non-stimulant medication without evidence of drug dependence, is a selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor that has historically been prescribed as an anti-depressant medication. The extended-release (ER) form was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in April 2021 for the treatment of ADHD in pediatric patients aged 6-17 years. Phase 2 and 3 randomized control trials have demonstrated significant efficacy of viloxazine in improving ADHD symptoms versus placebo. Related to its long-standing use as an antidepressant, the safety profile and pharmacokinetics of viloxazine are well understood. Viloxazine appears to be a suitable alternative to current standard-of-care pharmacotherapy for ADHD, but the further investigation remains to be done in comparing its efficacy to that of current treatments

Further Insights into the Reaction Be14(CH2,X)10He

A previously published measurement of the reaction of a 59 MeV/nucleon 14Be beam on a deuterated polyethylene target was further analyzed to search for 12He as well as initial state effects in the population of the 10He ground state. No evidence for either was found. A lower limit of about 1 MeV was determined for a possible resonance in 12He. In addition, the three-body decay energy spectrum of 10He could not be described by a reaction mechanism calculation based on the halo structure of the initial 14Be assuming a direct α-particle removal reaction

Numerical Model for Hydraulic Performance of Under-drained Perforated Pipe Surrounded by Loose Aggregate

Urbanization significantly alters the hydrological cycle, leading to reduced infiltration, increased flooding, and reduced water quality. Proper management of storm-water runoff is necessary to mitigate these undesired impacts. The use of Best Management Practices (BMP) and Low Impact Development (LID) is becoming more common day by day for this purpose and perforated pipes are one of the main components of these LIDs and BMPs. This poster presents results from a CFD model that combines both porous media flow and pipe flow. The model was developed in ANSYS FLUENT to examine the hydraulic behavior (stage-discharge relationship) of a porous pipe shrouded in loose aggregate for use as an underdrain in storm water management. The model was validated against the experimental data of Murphy et al. (2014) and was then used to undertake a detailed parametric study of porous pipe underdrain performance

A dose-finding study of carboplatin–epirubicin–docetaxel in advanced epithelial ovarian cancer

The docetaxel–carboplatin combination is active and well tolerated in patients with epithelial ovarian cancer. We added epirubicin to this combination to investigate additional benefits of anthracyclines in epithelial ovarian cancer. Twenty-one patients, FIGO Ic-IV, performance status 0–1, were treated in four dose cohorts. Docetaxel was fixed at 75 mg m−2, carboplatin doses were AUC 4–5 and epirubicin doses were 50–60 mg m−2. Drugs were given on day 1, every 3 weeks, except in cohort 3, where epirubicin was given on day 8. Dexamethasone was given prophylactically. One dose-limiting toxicity occurred in cohorts 1, 2 and 4, two occurred in cohort 3. Complicated neutropenia occurred in two patients in cohorts 1 and 2 and one patient in cohorts 3 and 4. Two patients experienced grade III diarrhoea or stomatitis in cohort 1 and two in cohort 3. There were no treatment-related deaths. Grade II sensory neuropathy occurred in one patient. No cardiac toxicity or significant oedema was observed. The overall response rate was 36%, and 62% were CA125 responders. The predefined maximum tolerated dose was exceeded in cohort 3. The cohort 4 dose level (epirubicin 50 mg m−2, carboplatin AUC 4, docetaxel 75 mg m−2), warrants further study

Observation and modeling of energetic particles at synchronous orbit on July 29, 1977

In the twelve hours following a worldwide storm, there was a series of at least four magnetospheric substorms, the last and largest of which exhibited an expansion phase onset at approximately 1200 UT. Data from six spacecraft in three general local time groupings (0300, 0700, and 1300 LT) were examined and vector magnetic field data and energetic electron and ion data from approximately 15 keV to 2 MeV were employed
